9.30.11

Good Bye September and Hello October! We had a great week! This week was tons of fun with this week's spirit days. We had a blast dressing up and bringing our stuffed animals in. We raised $35.50 in our class alone! Way to go! October is a big month. There is lots of things happening. I will be letting you know what is happening on the blog. So stay tuned! There will be new a calendar with lots of dates on it and a new homework packet on Monday in the folders.

Thank you to Ethan's mom, who was our mystery reader this week!
Thank you to Ben's mom for coming to Literacy Centers and helping out!

You can come and volunteer too! Check out the parent website tab at the top of the blog! Choose either Mystery Reader, Math Center Volunteer or Literacy Center Volunteer! The kids love love love having parents come visit!!

Thanks to all the parents who brought your child to Yogo-Ono. Our class tied for first! At the school wide morning meeting today, the teachers had a "dance off" to see who would win the trophy. The other teacher won, but it was fun!

We received a letter D for our letter exchange from Lompoc, California. So fun!

The new sight words for the week are:
   by
   no
  am
   is
  one
We are doing really well on the tests on Friday. Keep up the great work. Some of the ways we practice the sight words in class are: stamping the words, finding them in books, making them in magnetic letters, writing them on the smart board and talking about them. These are some ways you can practice the words at home as well. I don't want the words to be a flash card drill, so I make it fun. We want learning sight words to be fun!

Academic Update:

Literacy: We learned the letter D and have been doing great with our sight words. We are now really using them in our writing. Review the previous letters T,F,B,M,C,A,I,R,O and G. Keep reading as much as you can at home.

Math: We have finished up our chapter on patterns. We will start our next chapter on Monday.

Science: We are finished talking about rocks and soils.

Have a great weekend! Roll Tide!

We had a great, great week! Don't forget Yogo-Ono is tonight 9/23 3:30-8:00! Next week is a big week. It's our first spirit week of the year. We are supporting CURE Childhood Cancer. Each day is .50 and Friday is $1.00 to participate. Make sure your child is still in uniform everyday.  The class with the most money wins a prize! Please help us win!

Monday: 9/26 "Sock it to Cancer" Wear crazy socks. (.50)
Tuesday: 9/27 "Hats off to Patients" (.50)
Wednesday: 9/28 Wear a purple shirt and uniform bottoms (.50)
Thursday: 9/29 "Hugs for Patients" Bring in a stuffed animal (.50)
Friday: 9/30 N.U.T. PASS = No uniform ($1.00)

Adelaide's mom was our mystery reader this week. Thanks for coming to read to us!

We received another letter for our letter exchange this week. The letter O came from Roseville, California! So fun!

Thanks for all the families who showed up at Barnes & Noble. It was great to see you there. If I didn't see you there, I'm sorry I missed you. Thanks again for the books that were purchased for the class. Y'all are so sweet!

We had our spelling test today and we did awesome! Continue working on the words at home. We are doing a great job. The words lists in the folder will be tested at random dates. The class was tested this week. Most everyone is on list A except for a few on list 1-4. There is not time limit for these lists. The kindergarten standard for reading words is 30. I want them to go WAY above and beyond that. That is why I am providing multiple lists for them to go through... on their own time. The spelling test each week is just a small challenge I give them to help them learn the words.
Next week's words are:
we
go
if
my
but

Academic Update:

Literacy: We learned two new letters this week: O and P. Keep working on letters, sounds, and sight words.

Math: We are starting Chapter 2 in math on Patterns next week.

Science: We talked a lot about rocks and soils this week. We touched and explored the difference between Georgia red clay and sand.

Have a great weekend! Roll Tide!

9/16/11

We had such a great week! Sometimes, laughter is the best medicine -  and we do a ton of laughing in our class!! We also do a ton of singing and dancing. I'm sure your child has come home singing a color song, the number rock song or maybe the days of the week rap. Either way- we are having a blast!

We had our first Mystery Reader this week! Thanks so much to Ravin's mom for coming and reading to our class! She also gave each student a book! So sweet!! Thanks again!

Don't forget- you can go and sign up to volunteer to help out in Math Centers or Literacy Centers. The sign up is right on this blog! Check out the Parent Website tab at the top!

We received another letter from our letter exchange. It came from Orlando, FL. The letter was the letter K. So fun!

If your child wears a dress or skirt, PLEASE make sure they are wearing shorts under them. We are still learning how to be a little ladies when wearing them. We spend a lot of time on the floor, so this is very important.

Please save the date: SEPT. 23, 3:30-8:30p.m. This is our school's YOGO-ONO night. My class won twice last year for class participation and I would hopefully like to carry on that tradition. YOGO-ONO is a yogurt shop on Chastain Road. All proceeds go back to our school. The class with the most class participation wins the knight trophy. It's a big deal. I will be there. SEE YOU THERE!!

Milk is now 30 cents. Please take note.

Spelling Assessments*
*List A & 1 sight WORDS; help your child learn how to read these words. Read them a story and see how many sight words can they find in the story.

*Please help make learning these words fun for your child. You can also make flash cards and have them learn to read the words 5 at a time until they can read the whole list. Allow them to find their sight words in a book or newspaper. These words are not to be drilled but make the learning fun. Thanks for your help.

*We will start calling them up to read them to us next week. Allow them to read the list to you at home for practice. They must read the entire list to go into the treasure box. One treasure for each complete list read.

*We will have our next spelling test Friday, September 23, 2011. After they learn the words give them a practice spelling test at home. Number a piece of paper 1-5, then call the words out to them one at a time and have them write them next to the number. Thank you in Advance for your support!
