Estes Extras...

We had a great week! This coming Monday is Labor Day! There is no school on Monday! Enjoy the three day weekend! :) Next week is a BIG week! We have lots and lots of cool things happening!
  • Tuesday is Hats to Reading. The students are allowed to bring and wear a hat to school as long as it goes along with a book. We will be making hats- just in case someone forgets a hat. I want everyone to join in the fun. Our hat book is: If you give a Moose a Muffin. We read the book today and are looking forward to making the hats and showing them off on Tuesday!
  • Wednesday is our first school-wide Brainstorm. Brainstorm is once a month and is centered around science and math activities. Our class will rotate to the other four Kindergarten classrooms in our portable. The rotations will be 45 minutes long. The students will learn something exciting in each class! Brainstorm will last from 8:30am - 11:30 am. Please bring 2 snacks on Tuesday. Our lunch will be later than normal, so we will have a small snack in between the rotations and also a snack in the afternoon.
  • Friday is KSU game day. Kennesaw State students will be coming to our classrooms and playing games that are related to math and science. Game day will last from 8:30am-11:00am.
Technology Update:
We have had a technology filled week! We got two computers in our classroom! Yay! We are really enjoying them! Also, earlier in the week, we learned how to use the smart board in the library. We completed pattern games on it. The smart board is really awesome- we look forward to using it again!

Academic Update:
We have started our unit in literacy called, Look at Us!, this unit is an all about me unit. We read some stories about growing up and compared what we did when we were babies to what we do now. We wrote about what we wanted to be when we grow up in a shared writing activity. We read about different animals and the way they "talk".  In phonics, we have introduced two more letters, c and a. We learned how to write in our writing journals too. In math we continued working on positional words and started learning patterns and concrete graphs.

If your child forgets a water bottle or sweater, it is probably still in the classroom. We are really working on a sense of responsibility. I will remind them to get thier lunch box and waterbottle, but help them think about what needs to go home with them at the end of the day.

I sent home a monthly homework calendar today. The calendar stays in the folder all month long. The worksheets that are attached to the monthly homework parent letter stays at home. Please only turn in the homework at the end of the month. I will only send home extra math worksheets from the workbook when we need extra practice. I felt the monthly homework would be easier on you and me. Please let me know if you have any questions about it. Also, I attached a reading log. Please turn the reading log in at the end of the month too!

A special thanks to Elianna and her dad for sending in a Cicada today for us to look at, discuss and write about in our Science journals. The kids named it Chippy. The kids absolutely loved looking at it with magnifying glasses! If you have something that is science related and you would like us to look at and discuss, please send it in!

Please continue to sign up for our Mystery Reader, Math Centers and Literacy Centers. There are plenty of spaces left. The kids love visitors!! My husband, Stewart, was the Mystery Reader today! He read The Cat and the Hat! :)

The specials next week are: Tuesday: Art, Wednesday: No specials because of Brainstorm., Thursday: P.E. and Friday: No specials because of KSU game day.

Have a great three day weekend!
